Carnegie Mellon University Graduates with MEVA Formwork

Bill Gates Centre for Computer Science and Hillman Centre for Future Education

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is home to one of the country´s first departments of computer science, founded in July 1965. As the School outgrew its home, new, state of-the-art facilities became necessary to support the world-class program. It was graduation time!

The new 275,000 ft² complex consists of two wings: the Hillman Centre for Future Generation Education and the Bill Gates Centre for Computer Science will house 318 offices; computer labs, lecture halls, classrooms and a 250-seat auditorium. Pittsburgh-based MEVA client P. J. Dick awarded the concrete package, based on their track record and the company‘s reputation.

The facility consists of one building to which two wings are connected by bridges. A 70 ft elevation difference between the front and the back of the four-story structure complicates the site. The main building is trapezoid and features a glass-enclosed entry lobby with pedestrian bridges that will connect with the back of the building.

To keep to the schedule, P. J. Dick had to manage various overhangs and tight site access, requiring just-in-time delivery of materials and equipment. Work began with a two-level parking garage. The flexibility and high load capacity of the Imperial system delivered the needed results when pouring walls from 14’ up to 40‘ in height. The climbing platform KLK plus Imperial wall panels were used for the shear walls and the stairwell/elevator cores. P. J. Dick Construction Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is convinced of the twin system Imperial/MevaLite that covers all formwork tasks from foundation to high-rise. In this case, the narrow panels from the hand-set MevaLite system were used to form a round wall inside the main entrance. The concrete finish was first class.Carnegie Mellon University Graduates Bill Gates Centre for Computer Science and Hillman Centre for Future Education Whenever crane time was restricted or site space limited, hand-set MevaLite took over.

A particular challenge was pouring a rounded wall inside the main entrance without using additional formwork equipment. “Narrow MevaLite panels did the job fine“, confirms P. J. Dic's project manager Ralph Shipe, “and they delivered a beautiful concrete finish.“
